An intense, aromatic, richly textured wine. Dark purple in color with deep aromatics of blackberry, currants, spice and charcuterie.
Our Amphora Red Wine is made from grapes grown from some of our favorite blocks and sites within our Estate Vineyards in the Petaluma Gap. Grape selection varies from vintage to vintage depending on the growing season. In 2015, fruit was selected primarily from our Catapult Vineyard and the varietal that claimed our attention was some epic Syrah. The soil is predominately deep clay on the southwest facing slopes at Catapult. The result is that the clay pushes the vines to develop deep root systems and provides moisture throughout the entire season. These conditions are ideal for slow, even ripening in the face of the cool climate Petaluma Gap. The aforementioned “Gap” delivers cooling fog and wind in the morning followed by warm afternoons. Grapes thrive in these conditions, showcasing fresh fruit flavors and crisp acidity. The 2015 season was characterized by good winter rains, an early bud-burst followed by a warm summer. The crop was light, permitting good sunlight for ripening balanced by exposures that lengthened hang time gifting us with concentrated grapes at peak ripeness.
The grapes were handpicked at first light to retain freshness. Then the fruit was gently destemmed and transferred to amphorae where they were allowed to ferment naturally with no intervention. The grapes were punched down by hand two to three times a day for two weeks and then gently pressed off the skins. The wine was then transferred to barrel for oak aging for 15 months with 40% new French oak. After 15 months the wine was blended and bottled.
