The International Wine Review, Zinfandel Special Report

This is a blockbuster of a Zinfandel with great tannin and fruit. We’ve watched this fruit mature over the last few years from being just a few pounds of grapes that went into a red blend to being a wine worthy of its own bottle and recognition.

This is our fifth release of our Estate Tehama County Zinfandel. At an elevation of 1,800 feet in the foothills of the very southern end of the Cascade Mountain range lies an oasis. The surrounding countryside is made of red volcanic rock but the small bowl, where this Zin is grown, is green with growth. A nearby spring separates this area from the surroundings and provides a spectacular and unusual location to grow our Zin. Hot days and very cool nights create Zin grapes of amazing depth and fruit intensity. This area is rife with bears and we may have the perfect wine pairing to go with a bear burger - this wine is that big!

The grapes were harvested at the ideal ripeness and treated gently in the cellar to emphasize the explosive fruit characteristic of the block. The fruit was almost entirely destemmed and lightly crushed, with a large proportion of whole berries remaining in the must. Fermentation occurred at moderate temperatures in, stainless steel tanks, using only natural yeast. After 10 days of gentle "pump-overs" and near dryness, we drained and pressed the wine from its skins. The Tehama Zinfandel was minimally handled before being put down to barrel and was aged for 14 months in approximately 40% new medium-dark toasted French oak before bottling.
