Our 2019 Ancient Vines Carignane opens with aromas of plum, three berry jam, blackberries, elderberry, with a touch of vanilla, and 5 spice. On the palate, you are greeted by berry and spice flavors, with a hint of plum and a delightful pepper note. Well-structured tannins and bright acidity lead to a notable finish.
This Carignane is made from grapes from four separate vineyards located in the Northwest part of Oakley California. The vines all share sandy soil and receive a cooling from their proximity to the San Joaquin River. The newest of the vineyards was planted in 1940 and the balance in the early 1900s. This region is known for its ability to ripen these traditionally dry-farmed, head-trained vines to create powerful Cline wines.
Individual vineyard lots of grapes were harvested separately according to ripeness and balance of acidity. Grapes underwent total destemming and a very gentle crushing to ensure a large proportion of whole berries in the must. Fermentation occurred in stainless steel tanks with indigenous. It was then maintained at the ideal temperature to aid in the extraction of flavor and color. The wine was pressed off the skins at dryness before being racked to medium toasted French Oak where it was gently aged for 15 months.
