This Grenache Gris is a delightful wine with complex flavors of watermelon jolly rancher, pear, spice, orange zest, and roses. Its refreshing character and body make it perfect to drink on its own or with lighter fare. This is our first Grenache Gris and it certainly won't be our last.
We planted the Carneros J. Poppe Grenache vineyard in 2016 and this is the first year we have made a Grenache Gris from these grapes. The growth-limiting clay soils and cool breezes that flow over this vineyard create an environment where the grapes develop great flavors and maintain bright acid levels.
The wine is made from the red grape Grenache. It is made as a Blanc de Noir or a “white of a red grape”. The very light salmon color of the wine comes from the extraction of pigment from the skins. This color pick-up takes place during the gentle crushing and pressing of the grapes which happens before fermentation begins. We ferment the juice slowly at cold temperatures to preserve the bright fruit flavors.
